The Narrow Road: Jesus and His Message

For Tuesday (6/14), please read through some of the selections on Christianity in the Novak anthology (pp. 225-264).

What do you see here that hints at the potential for Christianity to become a "world" religion, i.e., a religion that isn't bound to a specific historical niche?  Do you see anything here hat might make it hard for Christianity to expand beyond its original homeland?

  1. After reading these selections, I think it is easy to see why Christianity became a world religion. One reason is that its message is for everyone, not just one group of people. It teaches about love, forgiveness, hope, and salvation. These are ideas that people from many different cultures can understand and connect with. The readings also show that Christians were told to share their faith with others, which helped Christianity spread to many places.

I also noticed that there were some challenges that could have made it harder for Christianity to grow. In the beginning, it was closely connected to Judaism, so people from other cultures may have had a hard time understanding its background. Early Christians were also persecuted, which made it dangerous to practice and share their beliefs. Another challenge was that Christianity teaches belief in one God, which was different from many cultures that believed in many gods.

Overall, I think Christianity was able to become a world religion because its message could apply to people everywhere. Even though it faced challenges in the beginning, its focus on faith, love, and sharing its beliefs helped it spread far beyond its original homeland.

  2. The spread of Christianity is not surprising because of its ethical teachings. Love, forgiveness, and mercy are seen all throughout the message of Jesus. The golden rule is rooted within the whole message of Jesus. Looking and loving for the lowly and not just those who "deserve" or have "earned" it.

However, the reason it may be controversial is when Jesus calls us to wash people's feet and not just get our feet washed. It feels good on the receiving end but the way of Jesus is difficult in practice and it costs something. It isn't about getting even with someone, but it is quite the opposite. It is self less and not self centered.
